Chose your opera…
A. Little Red’s Most Unusual Day
(offered Mondays and Wednesdays only)
Little Red’s Most Unusual Day warns us about the dangers of talking to strangers through the music of Rossini and Offenbach.
Forest Ranger Dudley is too shy to ask Little Red’s mom, the widow Hood, to the Forest Ranger Ball. For that reason he leaves a written invitation in a basket of flowers outside Little Red’s house. Unfortunately for Dudley, the basket is delivered to Granny. Needless to say, Granny does not mind this one bit. Granny kisses the Wolf, Mom gets impatient and Little Red gets in trouble. In fact, everyone experiences, in one way or another, a very, very unusual day.
B. Jack and the Bean Stalk by John Davies
(offered Tuesdays and Fridays only)
The story of Jack and the Bean Stalk addresses the topic of bullying through the popular music of Gilbert and Sullivan. Students have the opera-tunity to perform with Opera Columbus. Jack acquires magical beans that form a towering bean stalk. Climbing it, as any boy would, he discovers a larger than life bully who has stolen the family hen. Realizing all the trouble he’s caused, the giant resolves to behave well and agrees to treat others as they want to be treated.
Grade levels K-5
Duration: 45 min. (10 minute talk back with the artists following is optional)
Should you choose a student chorus, Opera Columbus staff will come to your school a few weeks prior to the performance to stage your students chorus so they know where to stand and act in the show. Opera Columbus also offers a one-hour, in-school student workshop on the day of the performance that helps up to 30 students perform as part of the opera chorus. Teachers are provided with the chorus music and CD in advance.
Non-chorus option: We also offer versions of both shows that do not require the use of a children’s chorus.
With Children’s Chorus:
$650 single performance or
$800 for two back-to-back performances
Without Children’s Chorus:
$550 single performance or
$700 for two back-to-back performances
Single Performance: If your performance includes the use of a children’s chorus, a single, two-hour block of time must be reserved in the performance area. For a performance with no children’s chorus, a time period of an hour and fifteen minutes is required for set-up, performance, and tear-down.
Double Performance: If your performance includes a children’s chorus, a single, three-hour block of time must be reserved in the performance area. For a performance without a children’s chorus, a single, one hour and forty minute block of time is needed.
PLEASE NOTE: If schools do not schedule performances back-to-back, two single performance fees will be required to cover artists’ fees.
