Dear Opera Enthusiasts,
Welcome to the world premiere of A Magic Flute Experience: The Temple, produced by Opera Columbus at an enchanted speakeasy, and stage directed by Allegra Libonati. This innovative adaptation reimagines Mozart’s The Magic Flute in a new, 90-minute version that removes racist or sexist elements, and is tailored for a contemporary audience.
Created by Mozart just one month before his death, The Magic Flute was intended for performance in a beerhall, making “The Temple” the perfect setting for our modern interpretation by Columbus-based artist Que Jones. In addition to the captivating music, engaging storyline, incredible staging, and powerful performances, our production features mesmerizing circus acts by talented performers of The People’s Circus, adding a dynamic element to our performances.
Through this reimagined version of a classic opera, we seek to honor Mozart’s legacy while offering a fresh and inclusive perspective on this widely admired work. Join us as we celebrate the timeless themes of love and friendship, and the quest for enlightenment, presented in a way that is both relevant and entertaining for today’s audiences.
This made possible by funding from PNC Arts Alive and the Ohio Arts Council’s ArtsNEXT program. Many thanks to our season sponsors The Columbus Foundation, Cult Marketing, Greater Columbus Arts Council, Nationwide, Ohio Arts Council, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Voice Center, and OPERA America.
And of course, we are deeply grateful for you, our biggest advocates. Together we are making operatic history! We are thrilled to share this extraordinary experience with you and hope you enjoy this unique blend of opera, circus, and history at The Temple.
Sincerely,
